What are a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and BMT?
A tonsillectomy is a procedure to remove your palatine tonsils. Palatine tonsils are lymphatic or immune tissues located in the back of your throat. When your tonsils become infected or large enough to cause breathing problems or obstructive sleep apnea, then your doctor may recommend undergoing a tonsillectomy.
An adenoidectomy is a procedure to remove adenoid tissue. Adenoids are lymphatic or immune tissues located posteriorly where the nose meets the throat. An adenoidectomy can be performed to treat impaired breathing, obstructive sleep apnea, adenoid infections, or recurrent otitis media (ear infections). Often, in children, the adenoid tissue is removed at the same time as the palatine tonsils.
BMT stands for bilateral myringotomy and tubes. A myringotomy, also known as a tympanotomy, is performed by making a small cut in the tympanic membrane or eardrum. Through this small cut, a tympanostomy tube (ear tube) can be placed to allow drainage of fluid or relieve pressure from the middle ear. A myringotomy and tube placement can be performed for chronic ear infections, recurrent episodes of barotrauma, or Eustachian tube dysfunction.
The procedure will be performed by one of our surgeons specializing in Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery, and typically lasts about 60-90 minutes. At the conclusion of the procedure, you will be transferred to the post anesthesia care unit, where you will be cared for by one of our highly experienced registered nurses.
Typically, if your doctor determines that you need a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, and myringotomy with tubes, then surgical treatment is strongly recommended. Your doctor may prescribe or recommend adjunctive therapies to help alleviate your symptoms.
