What is a Thyroid?

A thyroid is a butterfly-shaped endocrine or hormone producing gland located in the neck. The thyroid produces thyroid hormone, which is important for metabolism.

Hypothyroidism:

Hypothyroidism is the condition where the thyroid gland does not make enough thyroid hormone. Some symptoms are:

Cold intolerance
Fatigue
Weight gain despite poor appetite (myxedema)
Constipation

Hyperthyroidism:

Hyperthyroidism is the condition where the thyroid gland makes too much thyroid hormone. Some symptoms are:

Heat intolerance
Fast heart rate or palpitations
Tremor
Nervousness or anxiety
Weight loss
Diarrhea
Your doctor can make a diagnosis with a history, physical exam, and bloodwork. Likely, you will also need a thyroid ultrasound and a needle biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Sometimes additional imaging such as a thyroid scan may be needed.

Surgical Treatment

There are some conditions that require surgical removal of part (hemithyroidectomy) or all of the thyroid gland (total thyroidectomy).

Some conditions are:
Thyroid cancer
Multinodular goiter – an enlargement of the thyroid gland which compresses important surrounding structures or causes hyperthyroidism
Toxic thyroid nodule – a nodule that causes hyperthyroidism
Grave’s disease – an autoimmune disease which is associated with hyperthyroidism and exophthalmos (bulging eyes)
Thyroid nodule with unclear biopsy resultsThe hemithyroidectomy or total thyroidectomy will be performed by one of our surgeons specializing in General or Endocrine Surgery, and typically lasts about 90 minutes. At the conclusion of the procedure, you will be transferred to the post anesthesia care unit, where you will be cared for by one of our highly experienced registered nurses.

Non-Surgical Treatment

Your doctor should decide whether you will need surgical or non-surgical treatment. For multinodular goiters caused by iodine deficiency, treatment with iodine supplementation may be an option. If you are hypothyroid, then your doctor can prescribe thyroid hormone replacement such as levothyroxine. If you are hyperthyroid, depending on the cause, you could be treated with radioactive iodine or other antithyroid medications. Again, appropriate treatment should be determined by your doctor.
