What is a Blepharoplasty?

A blepharoplasty is a surgery on the eyelids and surrounding orbital structures, such as fat and muscle, to improve the patient’s cosmetic appearance and/or vision. Surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

For an upper blepharoplasty, some reasons for surgery are:
Dermatochalasis or excess skin, causing the appearance of droopy eyelids, which can block vision and give an aged appearance
Excess fat deposits causing puffy eyelids
Lacrimal gland (the tear gland) prolapse, which can cause puffiness of your outer eyelid
History of previous trauma or surgery causing eyelid malposition or asymmetry

Surgical Treatment

Most blepharoplasties are performed for facial rejuvenation. An upper and lower blepharoplasty can be performed at the same time or separately. If you are having problems with your vision, you should be evaluated by an eye doctor to rule out other diseases and determine if another procedure is best for you.

The procedure will be performed by one of our surgeons specializing in Facial Plastic Surgery, and typically lasts about 60 minutes. At the conclusion of the procedure, you will be transferred to the post anesthesia care unit, where you will be cared for by one of our highly experienced registered nurses.

Non-Surgical Treatment

Blepharoplasties for facial rejuvenation are not urgent surgeries. Some non-surgical treatments for upper and lower eyelid wrinkles and puffiness include Botulinum toxin (e.g. Botox, Dysport), hyaluronic acid dermal fillers (e.g. Juvaderm, Belotero), or eye creams that decrease puffiness and increase skin hydration. Any injections around the eyes should be performed by a specialist to reduce the risk of eye injury.
