What is a adenoidectomy?
An adenoidectomy is a procedure to remove adenoid tissue. Adenoids are lymphatic or immune tissues located posteriorly where the nose meets the throat. An adenoidectomy can be performed to treat impaired breathing, obstructive sleep apnea, adenoid infections, or recurrent otitis media (ear infections). Often, in children, the adenoid tissue is removed at the same time as the palatine tonsils.
Your doctor can refer you to a specialist in Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery (otolaryngology). From a history and physical exam, a diagnosis can be made. However, special studies such as imaging or a sleep study may be needed as well.
The procedure will be performed by one of our surgeons specializing in Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery, and typically lasts about 60-90 minutes. At the conclusion of the procedure, you will be transferred to the post anesthesia care unit, where you will be cared for by one of our highly experienced registered nurses.
Typically, if your doctor determines that you need an adenoidectomy, then surgical treatment is strongly recommended. Your doctor may prescribe or recommend adjunctive therapies to help alleviate your symptoms.
